Scottie Scheffler continues one of the most impressive years in PGA history. The No. 1 player in both the world and FedEx Cup standings won his fifth tournament of the year over the weekend, overtaking Collin Morikawa at the Memorial. It’s Scheffler’s fifth win in his last eight events and he hasn’t finished outside the top 10 in any start this year. He’ll try to win his sixth overall win and his second major title of the year on Thursday at the 2024 U.S. Open, which will take place at Pinehurst Resort Course No. 2 in Pinehurst, N.C.
Scheffler is an 11-4 favorite in the 2024 U.S. Open odds, up 4-1 since winning the Memorial Tournament. The trio of Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau are all 10-1. Other notables on the PGA odds board entering the U.S. Open 2024 include two-time U.S. Open champion Joe Root. These include U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka at 20-1, reigning U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark at 33-1 and three-time U.S. Open champion Tiger Woods at 125-1. Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been very popular since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model has produced a nearly $9,000 gain on its best bets since the restart, winning one tournament after another.
McClure’s model correctly predicted that Scottie Scheffler would top the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That wager came in at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets returned nearly $1,000.
The model also predicted Jon Rahm would emerge victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all about Rahm winning his second career major. Rahm was two strokes off the lead in the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second consecutive Masters win for the model, which also ensured Scheffler’s victory in 2022.
The same model also has him winning 12 majors entering the weekend, including three straight Masters and the 2024 PGA Championship. Anyone who has followed it has seen huge returns.
Now that the U.S. As the Open 2024 field takes shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising.
A big surprise: Justin Thomas, a 35-1 longshot, makes a strong run for the title. He’s a target for anyone looking for a big payday. Thomas’ first major start was at Pinehurst in the 2014 U.S. Open, when he was 21 years old and qualified through a sectional regional. He didn’t even have his PGA Tour card and missed the cut at the major, but he also gained invaluable experience with the course. That should serve him well for this year’s tournament, as should his solid play on the Tour this year. In fact, he’s 14th in the FedEx Cup standings after finishing 71st last season.
Thomas enters the Memorial with three consecutive top-25s, including two top-10 finishes. His scoring average (adjusted) is tied for 11th on the PGA Tour, and only six golfers average more birdies per round than the two-time major winner. He is excelling in both the long and short game, ranking 19th in overall driving efficiency and 10th in strokes gained: around the greens. Given his past major success and the return to play this season, it is unsurprising that there are 14 golfers with 2024 U.S. Open odds, so Thomas is a steal for PGA bets.
The model also examines where Scottie Scheffler finishes. There is some question over Scheffler’s status as a top contender, though golf bettors should consider value as his odds continue to shrink. At 11-4, he is now less than 3-1 odds, making him the heaviest favorite in golf major history.
This is the seventh time Scheffler has been favored in a major since 2023, though he has won only one major during that span. He is still looking for his first major win outside of Augusta. The U.S. Open The Open, though, is where he’s come closest, finishing third in 2023 and T2 in 2022. The model has locked in its Scottie Scheffler U.S. Open picks here.
